Skin Needling in Sydney

Precise depth. Your own collagen.

Also called microneedling, or collagen induction therapy. Fine needles make thousands of tiny channels in the skin. Your skin repairs them, and lays down new collagen as it does. Acne scars soften, pores look finer, texture smooths. At Cleon in Potts Point, every plan starts with a consultation with Dr Brandon, and every treatment is medically supervised. The needles are the simple part. How deep, where and how often is where the clinic comes in.

How it works

How does microneedling work?

Skin repairs anything it reads as damage. Skin needling uses that. The injury is small and controlled, and the repair is your skin’s own: new collagen and elastin, built where the needles went. It keeps building for months after the redness has gone.

Needle depth is set area by area A cross-section of skin. Needles reach a shallow depth around the eyes, a middle depth on the cheeks and forehead, and deeper into the dermis over acne scarring. New collagen forms around each channel. Around eyesShallow Cheeks, browMid Acne scarringDeeper SurfaceEpidermis Collagen layerDermis Deep tissueNot reached New collagen forms around each channel
  • The treatment

    Day 0

Sterile, single-use needles make micro-channels to a set depth. The surface stays largely intact, so it heals quickly. The depth changes across the face: finer around the eyes, deeper over scarring.

  • Repair

    Days 1–7

Redness settles over one to three days. Underneath, repair has already started. Skin often looks fresher within the week.

    • Redness, like mild sunburn
    • Gentle skincare only
    • SPF every day
  • Remodelling

    Weeks 4–12

New collagen and elastin form and mature. This is when texture, scars and fine lines change. It happens gradually, so the result looks like your skin, just better. That’s why sessions are spaced weeks apart.

What it treats

What does skin needling treat?

Acne scars, enlarged pores, uneven texture, fine lines, stretch marks. Needling is very good at texture and less good at most other things. Your consultation will tell you which side of that line your concern sits on.

Acne scars

Skin needling is one of the most used treatments for acne scarring. Rolling and boxcar scars soften as new collagen fills in beneath them. Deep, tethered scars may need another treatment alongside.

Texture & enlarged pores

Rough, uneven skin texture becomes smoother, and enlarged pores look finer over a course of microneedling.

Close-up of a woman's eye with fine lines at the outer corner

Fine lines

Fine lines and early wrinkles, especially around the eyes and mouth, where skin is thin and lines are etched rather than folded.

Close-up of a man's eyes with tired-looking skin and shadows beneath them

Dull, tired skin

Better turnover, a smoother surface and more even light. Skin that looks like you slept well.

Surgical & injury scars

Older, settled scars can blend better with the skin around them. The scar needs to be fully healed first.

Stretch marks across a shoulder

Stretch marks

The texture and colour of stretch marks can soften. Older, silver marks respond more slowly than newer ones.

Is this right for me?

Am I suited to skin needling?

This might suit you if

  • Texture is your main concern: scarring, pores, roughness
  • You want a result built on your own collagen, gradually
  • You have a deeper skin tone. Needling carries a lower risk of pigment change than many lasers
  • You can allow a day or three of redness after each session, and commit to a course

Worth discussing in consultation first

  • You’ve taken isotretinoin (Roaccutane) in the last six months
  • You have active acne, cold sores or a skin infection in the area
  • You form keloid scars, take blood thinners, or you’re pregnant
  • Your main concern is sagging or volume loss. Needling won’t lift skin

Dr Brandon in the Cleon clinic in Potts Point

A doctor-led clinic

Why have microneedling at a doctor-led clinic?

Skin needling is offered almost everywhere in Sydney: salons, spas, home rollers. The difference is depth, and judgement. At Cleon in Potts Point, Dr Brandon assesses your skin first and sets the plan. Your treatment is performed by our clinical team under his medical supervision, with sterile, single-use needles, in a medical clinic.

A doctor can also see what needling won’t fix, and pair it with what will: PRP, LED to help skin settle, or prescription skincare between sessions. Nothing is standardised.

What to expect

What does a skin needling treatment involve?

Every patient follows the same journey. The detail is specific to you.

  1. Consult

Dr Brandon assesses your skin, listens to what you want to change and checks needling is right for you. No treatment agenda.

  2. Prepare

Some skin does better with a few weeks of prescribed skincare first. Retinoids and exfoliants stop a few days before. If you get cold sores, an antiviral may be prescribed.

  3. Treatment day

Numbing cream goes on first. The needling itself takes 20 to 30 minutes, performed by our clinical team under medical supervision. It feels like vibration and light scratching rather than pain.

  4. The first few days

Skin is red and warm, like mild sunburn. Gentle cleanser, prescribed serum, SPF. No make-up for 24 hours, and no gym, sauna or swimming for 48.

  5. Your course

Sessions are four to six weeks apart, so new collagen has time to form. Most concerns need three to six.

  6. Follow up

Your progress is reviewed and the plan adjusted, with Dr Brandon overseeing every step. Results are monitored, not assumed.

Frequently asked

Skin needling and microneedling in Sydney: your questions

Anything else, ask at your consultation or email hello@cleonclinic.com.

Does skin needling hurt?

Numbing cream goes on first, so most people feel vibration and a light scratch rather than pain. Bonier areas, like the forehead and jawline, are more noticeable. Most people find it very manageable.

Is there downtime after skin needling?

Some. Expect redness, like mild sunburn, for one to three days, then some dryness or light flaking. Deeper treatments mean a little more. This is always discussed in advance so you can plan around it and make an informed decision.

Is skin needling the same as microneedling?

Yes. Skin needling, microneedling, collagen induction therapy and dermal needling are the same treatment, and you’ll also see it sold under device brand names. The name matters less than the depth, the sterility and who’s deciding both.

Is it the same as a home derma roller?

No. Home rollers work at very shallow depths, and a rolling needle enters the skin at an angle rather than straight in. In clinic, needling works at a controlled, medical depth, with sterile, single-use needles.

How long does a skin needling treatment take?

Allow about an hour. Numbing cream needs time to work, then the needling itself takes 20 to 30 minutes. You can drive yourself home afterwards.

When will I see results from microneedling?

Skin often looks fresher within a week or two of the first session. Changes to scarring, pores and fine lines show more slowly, usually from about six weeks, as new collagen forms. The result keeps improving for around three months after your last session.

How many skin needling treatments will I need?

It depends on your starting point and what you want to change. Texture and glow often need about three sessions. Acne scarring usually needs four to six, spaced four to six weeks apart. The aim is not to over-treat, but to use the minimum effective approach for a natural result.

Will microneedling improve my skin long-term?

Yes, when it’s the right treatment for the concern. The collagen your skin builds is your own, so it lasts the way your skin does, and ages with you. Long-term improvement comes from the right treatments at the right time, not from repeating the same one indefinitely. Plans are adjusted as your skin changes.

How do I choose between microneedling and laser resurfacing?

Both improve skin quality, but they work in different ways. Needling builds collagen through controlled injury, leaving the surface largely intact. Laser resurfacing works at both surface and deeper levels, and can also address tone and pigment. The right choice depends on what’s driving the concern, not just what it looks like on the surface. Sometimes it’s both, at different times.

What is the best treatment for acne scars?

It depends on the type of scar. Rolling and boxcar scars usually respond well to skin needling, on its own or with PRP. Deep ice-pick scars and tethered scars often need something more, such as laser resurfacing or subcision. Most people have a mix, which is why the scars are assessed one by one before a plan is made.

Is skin needling safe for darker skin tones?

Generally, yes. It’s one of the reasons needling is chosen. It doesn’t rely on heat, so the risk of pigment change is lower than with many lasers. Depth and aftercare are still adjusted for your skin, and assessed at consultation.

Can microneedling be combined with other treatments?

Often. PRP can be applied during needling, using growth factors from your own blood, for $999 as a single session. LED light therapy helps skin settle afterwards. Deeper lines, volume changes and laxity are structural, and usually need a different approach alongside. What belongs in your plan is agreed in consultation.

Do I need to know what treatment I want before booking?

No. Most patients don’t, and it’s usually better that way. The same concern can have different underlying causes. You might come in asking about needling and leave with a different plan, or a combination. Not sure where to start? That’s what the consultation is for.

What if I’ve had needling or other treatments elsewhere?

That’s very common. The focus is on assessing your skin as it is now, rather than continuing a previous plan. Sometimes the approach stays similar; sometimes it changes. The aim is always to move forward with a plan that improves your overall result.

How much does skin needling cost in Sydney?

$350 for a single treatment, or a course of three for $999, which works out at $333 a session. Adding a topical skin booster, applied while the channels are open, is $499 for a single or $1,199 for the course. Needling with PRP is $999. How many you actually need is set in consultation. No treatment agenda.
