Why it matters

Common. Treatable. Worth taking seriously.

Erection problems are one of the most common reasons men see a doctor, and one of the most put off. They’re also an early warning: the blood vessels involved often show trouble before the heart does.

52%
of men aged 40 to 70 have some degree of difficulty with erections.1
2 in 3
men with both heart disease and erection problems noticed the erection problems first.2
3 years
was the average gap between the erection problems and the heart symptoms, in the same study.2

Causes

What causes erectile dysfunction?

Usually more than one thing. Erectile dysfunction is a symptom, not a diagnosis, and the treatment follows the cause.1

In short

Erectile dysfunction is difficulty getting or keeping an erection firm enough for sex. It affects about half of men aged 40 to 70 to some degree, and it can be an early sign of heart disease. At Male by Cleon in Potts Point, Sydney, treatment starts with a private, doctor-led consultation that looks for the cause: $100 in clinic, or a free video call first. Options include treating the cause, lifestyle change, pelvic floor training, prescription options where appropriate, penile PRP, counselling, and referral to a urologist.

Blood vessels & heart

An erection depends on healthy blood flow. Narrowed or stiff vessels often show up here first.3

Diabetes & weight

Blood sugar, blood pressure and weight all affect the vessels and nerves involved.

Hormones

Low testosterone and thyroid problems can lower drive and affect erections, and are simple to test for.

Medicines

Some medicines for blood pressure, mood and the prostate can play a part. Never stop one without advice.

Alcohol, smoking & sleep

All three matter more than most men expect, and all three can change.

Head space

Stress, anxiety, low mood, relationship strain and performance pressure. Often part of the picture, even when there’s a physical cause too.

The assessment

A questionnaire isn’t an assessment.

An online form can post a prescription. It can’t find the reason you needed one. Because erection problems can come before heart disease, we check more than your erections.

What we look at

  • Your history: when it started, what’s changed, morning erections, desire
  • Blood pressure, weight and, where it will change the plan, blood tests for sugar, cholesterol and hormones
  • Your medicines and supplements
  • Sleep, alcohol, smoking and exercise
  • Stress, mood and relationships
  • An examination where it’s needed

Erection enhancement

How can erections be improved?

The right plan depends on the cause, and it often combines more than one approach. These are the options we work through with you.

Lifestyle works, given time

In one trial, two years of weight loss and exercise restored normal erections in about a third of obese men.4 It’s slower than a prescription, and it fixes more than one thing.

  1. 01

    Treat the cause

Blood pressure, blood sugar, hormones, a medicine that’s getting in the way. Fixing the cause can be enough on its own.

  2. 02

    Heart & metabolic health

Weight, exercise, alcohol and smoking, with a plan you can actually keep.

  3. 03

    Pelvic floor training

The muscles that help hold an erection can be trained. Taught properly and practised for months, it helps some men a good deal.

  4. 04

    Prescription options

Where they’re appropriate and safe for you: prescribed after an assessment, and reviewed, not repeated on autopilot.

  5. 05

    Penile PRP

Platelets from your own blood, placed in the erectile tissue. Promising for some men, not proven. What the trials show.

  6. 06

    Counselling & referral

A psychologist or sex therapist when head space is part of it, and a urologist for specialist options when they’re needed.

Penile PRP

Does penile PRP work for erectile dysfunction?

Possibly, for some men. It isn’t proven. PRP is made from a small sample of your own blood, concentrated, and placed in the erectile tissue, with the idea that the platelets’ growth factors support blood vessel and tissue repair. Here are the two placebo-controlled trials so far.

The two placebo-controlled trials of PRP for erectile dysfunction
Trial Who and what What it found
Greece, 2021 60 men with mild to moderate erectile dysfunction. Two sessions of PRP or placebo, a month apart. At six months, 69% of the PRP group had a meaningful improvement, against 27% on placebo.5
United States, 2023 61 men with mild to moderate erectile dysfunction. Two sessions of PRP or placebo, a month apart. No difference: 58% improved with PRP and 54% with placebo, one month after treatment.6

Both trials were small and short. Larger, longer studies are needed before anyone can call it proven. If PRP is discussed in your consultation, you’ll hear both sides, and what we’d expect for you.

How it’s done at Cleon

  • A blood sample, taken in clinic
  • Concentrated with the EmCyte PurePRP system, ARTG listed (ARTG ID 385251, Class IIa medical device)
  • Numbing first, then the PRP is placed in the erectile tissue
  • The trials used two sessions a month apart; your plan is set with you

Who it may suit

  • Men with mild to moderate erectile dysfunction, after the cause has been looked at
  • Men who’d like an option alongside, or instead of, regular medication
  • Not a first step, and not a size treatment. Penile enhancement covers size

Is this right for me?

Should I see a doctor about my erections?

This might suit you if

  • Erections are less firm, less reliable or harder to keep than they used to be
  • You’ve tried something online and want to know why it’s happening
  • You want the options explained honestly, including the ones we don’t offer
  • You’d rather start with a private video call

Worth discussing in consultation first

  • Chest pain, breathlessness on exertion, or known heart disease. Some treatments interact with heart medicines, and the heart comes first
  • Diabetes, high blood pressure or high cholesterol
  • A new curve, a lump, or pain with erections
  • Low desire or low energy as well. Health & Performance looks at hormones too

Erection enhancement is part of Enhancement at Male by Cleon, alongside penile enhancement, premature ejaculation, scrotal aesthetics and anal sphincter relaxation. Anything else, ask at your consultation or email hello@cleonclinic.com.

What is erectile dysfunction?

Difficulty getting or keeping an erection firm enough for sex, often enough that it bothers you. About half of men aged 40 to 70 have some degree of it.1 It’s common, and usually treatable.

What causes erectile dysfunction?

Usually a mix: blood vessel health, diabetes, blood pressure, hormones, medicines, alcohol, smoking, sleep, stress and anxiety.1 Finding the mix is the point of the assessment, because the treatment follows the cause.

Can stress or anxiety cause erectile dysfunction?

Yes. Stress, anxiety, low mood and performance pressure can cause erection problems on their own, and they make a physical cause worse. One bad night can start a cycle of worry that keeps it going. That’s why head space is part of every assessment, and counselling or sex therapy is one of the options.

At what age does erectile dysfunction start?

It can happen at any age, and it becomes more common with time: about half of men aged 40 to 70 have some degree of it.1 In younger men, anxiety is more often part of the picture, but physical causes still need ruling out.

How is erectile dysfunction diagnosed?

By a doctor talking to you and examining you: when it started, morning erections, desire, your health, your medicines, and blood pressure, with blood tests for sugar, cholesterol and hormones where they’ll change the plan. There’s no single test, and no questionnaire that replaces the conversation.

Can erectile dysfunction be a sign of heart disease?

Yes. Men with erectile dysfunction have a higher risk of heart attack and stroke,3 and in one study of men with both, two in three noticed the erection problems first, by an average of about three years.2 That’s why we check your heart health, not just your erections.

Can erectile dysfunction be cured?

Often it can be improved a great deal, and sometimes the cause can be fixed outright. Weight loss and exercise restored normal erections in about a third of obese men in one trial,4 and changing a medicine or treating a hormone problem can help too. When it can’t be cured, it can usually be managed well.

What is the best treatment for erectile dysfunction?

The one that matches the cause. For some men that’s a prescription, for others it’s weight, sleep or a medicine change, pelvic floor training, or help with anxiety. Often it’s a combination, and it’s reviewed until it works.

Should I see a doctor or use an online ED service?

Online services are convenient, and for some men they’re enough. But a questionnaire can’t examine you, check your blood pressure or blood sugar, or ask why it started. If it’s new, getting worse, or you have other health conditions, see a doctor. That can be us.

Does PRP work for erectile dysfunction?

Possibly, for some men, but it isn’t proven. One randomised trial found a clear benefit for mild to moderate erectile dysfunction at six months; another found no difference from placebo.5,6 Larger, longer studies are needed. If PRP is discussed, you’ll hear both sides.

Is penile PRP the same as the ‘P-Shot’?

‘P-Shot’ is a trademarked name for one branded protocol of penile PRP. The idea is the same: platelets from your own blood, placed in the penis. We don’t use the trade name and aren’t part of that network. What matters more is how the PRP is prepared, who it suits, and what the evidence says.

Does penile PRP hurt?

Numbing is used first, and most men describe brief, mild discomfort. Some tenderness or bruising for a day or two is common.

Do pelvic floor exercises help erectile dysfunction?

They can. A proper programme of pelvic floor exercises improves erections for some men. It works best taught properly, and practised for months.

Can young men get erectile dysfunction?

Yes. It’s worth checking at any age. Stress and anxiety are often part of it in younger men, but physical causes still need ruling out.

Will I need medication forever?

Not necessarily. If the cause can be treated, some men need less, or none. Others use medication only when they need it. Your plan is reviewed, not repeated on autopilot.

How much does erectile dysfunction treatment cost?

A face-to-face consultation at Male by Cleon is $100, which comes off your treatment if it’s done on the day, and a private video call is free. Treatment is priced in consultation, because it depends on what the assessment finds. If you’re coming for a medical concern, ask us what applies with Medicare when you book.

Is there an erectile dysfunction clinic near me in Sydney?

Male by Cleon is at Ground 02, 46a Macleay Street, Potts Point, a short walk from Kings Cross station and close to Elizabeth Bay, Darlinghurst, Rushcutters Bay, Woolloomooloo and the CBD. If you’re further away, start with a free video call.
