What’s normal?

How long should sex last?

Less than the films suggest. In a study of 500 couples across five countries, timed with a stopwatch, the median was 5.4 minutes, and the range ran from under a minute to more than 40.2

In short

Premature ejaculation means usually finishing sooner than you or your partner would like, without being able to delay it, in a way that causes distress. Lifelong premature ejaculation is almost always within about a minute; acquired is a change to about three minutes or less. It affects about one man in five, and it’s very treatable. At Male by Cleon in Potts Point, Sydney, treatment starts with a private, doctor-led consultation: $100 in clinic, or a free video call first.

It’s about control, not a number

Plenty of men last less than the median and are perfectly happy. Others last longer and still feel rushed. What matters is whether you can choose when, and whether it’s bothering you or your partner.

Two kinds

What counts as premature ejaculation?

Doctors recognise two kinds, and the plan depends on which one you have.

Lifelong

  • Since your first sexual experiences
  • Almost always within about a minute
  • Hard or impossible to delay
  • Very treatable, usually with a combination of approaches

Acquired

  • A clear change from how things used to be
  • Down to about three minutes or less
  • Often linked to erection problems, stress, or a medical cause such as prostate inflammation or an overactive thyroid
  • Treating the cause often helps

Treatment

How do you treat premature ejaculation?

Usually with more than one thing at once. These are the options we work through with you, starting with the ones that need nothing but practice.

Techniques work, taught properly

Squeeze, stop-start and sensate focus can add real time for some men, and they work better still alongside other treatment. The evidence is limited, and how they’re taught matters.

  1. 01

    Techniques

Stop-start, squeeze and sensate focus, taught properly, not tips from a forum.

  2. 02

    Pelvic floor training

Regular practice over about three months helps many men gain control.

  3. 03

    Erections first

When erection problems are part of it, they’re treated first. Hurrying to finish before an erection fades is a common cause of the acquired kind. Erection enhancement.

  4. 04

    Topical options

Numbing sprays and creams can help some men, used correctly so they don’t numb a partner too.

  5. 05

    Prescription options

Where they’re appropriate and safe for you, prescribed after an assessment and reviewed.

  6. 06

    In-clinic options

Discussed in consultation, with an honest view of what they can and can’t do.

  7. 07

    Counselling & sex therapy

On their own or alongside other treatment, especially when anxiety or a relationship is part of it.

Is this right for me?

Should I see a doctor about premature ejaculation?

This might suit you if

  • You usually finish sooner than you’d like, and can’t delay it
  • It’s started affecting your confidence, or your relationship
  • You’ve tried the internet’s advice and want a plan that actually fits
  • You’d rather start with a private video call

Worth discussing in consultation first

  • Erection problems as well. They often come first
  • Pain, burning or discomfort when you ejaculate or pass urine, which can mean prostate inflammation
  • Palpitations, weight loss or feeling shaky, which can point to the thyroid
  • Medicines for mood or anxiety, which can change timing

What is premature ejaculation?

Usually finishing sooner than you or your partner would like, without being able to delay it, in a way that causes distress. It affects about one man in five, and fewer than one in ten have asked a doctor about it.1

How long should sex last?

There’s no should. In a stopwatch study of 500 couples, the median time from penetration to ejaculation was 5.4 minutes, and the range ran from under a minute to 44 minutes.2 What matters is control, and whether it’s bothering you or your partner.

Is 5 minutes premature ejaculation?

No. Five minutes is close to the median of 5.4 minutes measured by stopwatch in 500 couples.2 Premature ejaculation is defined by control and distress, not by a stopwatch: lifelong premature ejaculation usually means within about a minute, and acquired means a clear drop to about three minutes or less.

What’s the difference between lifelong and acquired premature ejaculation?

Lifelong means it’s been that way since your first sexual experiences, almost always within about a minute. Acquired means a clear change from how things used to be, down to about three minutes or less. Acquired premature ejaculation often has a cause that can be treated.

Can premature ejaculation be cured?

Many men gain good control with the right combination of techniques, training and treatment, and when there’s a cause, such as erection problems, treating it often helps. Some men need ongoing treatment to keep the result.

How can I last longer in bed?

Start with what’s normal: the median is about five and a half minutes. If you’re consistently much quicker than you’d like, stop-start techniques, pelvic floor training, treating any erection problems, and topical or prescription options can all help. The right combination depends on the cause.

Do the stop-start and squeeze techniques work?

They can. Squeeze, stop-start and sensate focus add real time for some men, and work better still alongside other treatment. They need to be taught properly and practised.

Do pelvic floor exercises help premature ejaculation?

They can help. With regular practice over about three months, many men gain better control. It works best taught properly, and alongside the other parts of a plan.

Do numbing sprays work?

They can help some men by reducing sensitivity. Used wrongly, they numb too much, or numb a partner, so we’ll go through how to use them if they’re part of your plan.

Can premature ejaculation be treated without medication?

Often, yes. Techniques taught properly, pelvic floor training, treating erection problems, and counselling or sex therapy all work without medication, and many men start there. Topical and prescription options are added only where they’re appropriate for you.

Is premature ejaculation linked to erectile dysfunction?

Often. Men who worry about losing an erection can hurry to finish, and that can become a habit. When both are happening, we treat the erections first.

Is premature ejaculation psychological?

Sometimes partly, rarely only. Anxiety and pressure can make it worse, but biology, erection problems, the prostate and the thyroid can all play a part. That’s why we assess before we suggest anything.

Can my partner come to the appointment?

Yes. Partners are always welcome to come along, as support or as a chaperone, but there’s no need to bring anyone if you’d rather not.

How much does premature ejaculation treatment cost?

A face-to-face consultation at Male by Cleon is $100, which comes off your treatment if it’s done on the day, and a private video call is free. Treatment is priced in consultation, because it depends on the plan. If you’re coming for a medical concern, ask us what applies with Medicare when you book.

Is there premature ejaculation treatment near me in Sydney?

Male by Cleon is at Ground 02, 46a Macleay Street, Potts Point, a short walk from Kings Cross station and close to Elizabeth Bay, Darlinghurst, Rushcutters Bay, Woolloomooloo and the CBD. If you’re further away, start with a free video call.
